Connect2Complete Miami Hamilton hit a milestone today!
We had our first
EVER C2C civic engagement project with one of our classes. The first half of
the Math 002 class that we are working with went to Shared Harvest Foodbank
this morning to participate in their backpack program. Shared Harvest an only
accommodate groups of 15 or smaller on Fridays. The Math 002 happens to be 24
students, which means that we had to split the class in half in order to
volunteer there. Thankfully, the way the class is set up going to Shared
Harvest on two consecutive Fridays worked out great!
Each week Shared
Harvest helps support the community by providing thousands of children on the
free & reduced lunch program with food for the weekend. The students were
able to see math at work while they filled bags with cereal, canned goods,
pudding and rice krispie treats. As the students filled a bag they would place
it in a cardboard box. Each box contains 5 bags. The boxes were then placed on
a pallet in a particular arrangement designed by Shared Harvest. There were 7
boxes in each row and 5 rows on a pallet (or skid).
On the ride home
from Shared Harvest we discussed math related questions such as how many boxes
were on each pallet, how many bags were on a pallet, how many items were placed
in each bag. etc. We also discussed what they liked about the project and if
they would do it again (and of course they said yes!). Students are also
completing a qualitative and quantitative post survey that will
be analyzed for project achievement.
The project was a
great success and the second half of the class will go to Shared Harvest next
Friday.
Here are some
